How to find hostname on Windows 7

Computer's hostname is a unique identifier of a electronic devices (i.e computers, printers, etc.) connected on a network. According to Wikipedia, “A hostname is a label that is assigned to a device connected to a computer network and that is used to identify the device in various forms of electronic communication such as the World Wide Web, e-mail or Usenet.”

On Windows 7, there are several ways to find out the hostname of a computer. Follow the instructions below.

Option 1 – Using the Computer properties.

1.     Click Start.

2.     Right click on Computer.

3.     Select Properties.

4.     The hostname is displayed right next to Computer name.

Option 2 – Using the Command prompt.

1.     Click Start.

2.     Click All Programs or Programs.

3.     Click Accessories.

4.     Click Command Prompt.

5.     New Windows will popup. At the prompt, type hostname, and then hit the enter key.

6.     The result on the next line is the hostname.

Option 3 – Using System Information.

1.     Click Start.

2.     On the search box, type msinfo32, and then hit the enter key.

3.     On the System Information, System Summary – right pane. Item “System Name”, The value is the hostname.
