Many people are not aware of this, and somehow think that a website is just “there”, but without the technology behind website hosting, you do not have much of a chance!

So in this blog posts I am going to take a look at some of the technologies behind web hosting and some of the better companies on the market.

When I walking about website hosting, what I am basically talking about are servers.

If you don’t know what servers are, then you might want to read the definition here on wikipedia.

But to give you a quick summary, what a server is is basically a very powerful computer that waits for “requests” from another computer and then “serves” a response.

Which means that if you go to a website, your request for that site is sent to the server, then the server hands you back the page (images, video, html code etc).

What goes on in the background is actually quite complex but that is the main gist of it.

While we are on the subject, lets just quickly cover some of the better hosting companies out there in case you just want a quick answer on this question.

There are many cheap hosting companies out there nowadays and you have to be careful which one you choose. That is for sure.

But if you go for companies like BlueHost or HostGator, then they are also cheap but reasonably reliable. In fact both of these companies are actually owned by the same company now anyway.

Let’s jump inside some of the technology that goes into web hosting to give you a better idea of what is going on.

The Servers

The backbone of any web hosting company is it’s servers. And when you talk about servers, one of the biggest things in terms of power is the chips.

Currently Intel is one of the most influential suppliers of chips for the server industry and their Xeon series of chips is at the forefront of parallel processing which gives you more bang for your buck.

Another area of the server that is very important is the disk. Previously disks were always moving, but the more modern disks are solely made of chips or more technically – Solid State Drives.

Solid State Drives are a lot faster and more reliable, but also more expensive. So they are slowly making an impact into the server industry but only on the more premium models for now.

In fact Google still uses cheap disks in their servers because they have a great system in place to control them and make sure they do not lose data even if one disk fails.

The Software

When you talk about software and operating systems you normally think about Windows or Mac. But when it comes to servers it is more often Windows vs Linux (the open source, free software).

Most powerful and reliable servers use Linux, or a flavor of it these days. It is very powerful, robust and reliable. And a lot cheaper than Windows.

This is just the basis for the server of course, and there is more software placed on top of that to run all of the programs and websites that are built.

More often than not WordPress is used for creating blogs and websites.

But the basis of all of the maintenance that customers do on their sites is usually done with something like cPanel.

And this is where things have also change a lot over the last decades.

With the invention of the digital camera, we now have the possibility of smaller, lighter and cheaper cameras, like never before.

On top of this amazing list of benefits, you also have the ability to record huge amounts of footage, and store them in your pocket – literally.

Where before you had to have film on had, and enough. Now you have almost unlimited space. And if you make a mistake, you can simply record over the previous take.

Not that this is something you should be doing in video production, but it is possible. Before, it was unheard of. Not even possible.

With these major changes in camera tech, have come the new possibilities to produce video with footage from all over.

Now you can mount small cameras on small helicopters and shoot aerial footage that before was the realm of those with million dollar budgets.

This footage was filmed with the DJI Phantom, a model that is quite popular amongst aerial photographers and videographers.

As you can see in the video, it can produce some amazing footage for video, and is also extremely cost effective.

Computer Software Advances for Video

Of course, all of this footage has to be finally processed on a computer with some amazing video software to complete the video production.

An still at the top of the rack is the mac and pc software that video producers are using to amazing effect.

There are many useful programs for this kind of things such as Adobe Premier or even the amazing Mac Final Cut Pro.

No one can tell you which one is best, because every video production company has their own preference, but they all keep getting more amazing with every version.


Technology has had almost no bigger impact than with video production.

With the advances in digital, cameras, computers, aerial photography and software, we are at a place that is quite amazing compared to 10 years ago!

Smartphone Technology: Latest Battery that Can Triple Your Smartphone Battery Life

The battery barons of Stanford have done it again. Led by Yi Cui, the team has created the so called “Holy Grail” of the Li-Ion battery design.

To be more specific, they have finally discovered the way to create and develop a rugged lithium electrode that has the capability to increase the lithium-ion battery life up to four times.

The rugged lithium electrode can increase the battery life of your mobile phone for up to three times as well as reduce the cost and size of the electric cars battery pack.

Battery Capacity

The capacity of a lithium-ion battery is largely dictated by the amount of the lithium ions sucked into the anode while charging. Almost all lithium-ion batteries these days are made with graphite. This material is long lasting and relatively cheap and keeps its capacity over a hundred discharge and charge cycles.

However, the useful capacity of graphite is low. Lithium is currently the best anode material available. But, it can potentially explode when it comes into contact with electrolyte. If this issue can be rectified, the lithium-ion battery can have a higher capacity.

A New Approach with Nanotech

nanotubes stanfordYi Cui and his team at the Stanford University have found the newest approach to creating lithium anodes that could make the battery’s capacity more than 150 discharge and charge cycles and not explode. The battery barons of the Stanford University are responsible for a huge number of battery breakthroughs that people have come over.

Like the other battery breakthroughs, the nanotechnology is the key to develop the new lithium electrode. Lithium tends to expand dramatically when it has absorbed ions while charging. As it expands, cracks are created in the metal. The lithium ions can ooze out from these cracks and from dendrites or mossy metal deposits.

The dendrites can lower the lithium-ion battery efficiency that’s why it becomes useless after it has reached its maximum charge/discharge cycle.
Stanford battery barons have placed a layer of carbon nanosphere on the surface of the lithium anode.

The layer of carbon nanosphere can prevent the cracks on the metal and avoid dendrites from forming. These nanospheres can create a series of interconnected domes strong enough to keep the structural integrity of the lithium-ion battery. This also allows the ions carrying electricity to pass back and forth into the anode.

To be more specific, the layer or carbon nanosphere is a protective layer about 20 millimeters thick. This prevents the battery from reacting explosively with electrolytes.

More Efficient Batteries

The Stanford lithium-ion battery can have 99% coulombic efficiency even after 150 charge/discharge cycles.

Yi Cui was quoted as saying that this is short for the 99.9% required for a commercial viable design. And although they are not at 99.9% threshold yet, they are very close to it.  By making significant improvements to their previous designs they are certainly getting there with both new electrolytes and additional engineering,

The Cui team can realize a lithium-ion battery design that can power Smartphones three to four times longer than the current Li-ion batteries available today.
The new lithium anode not only powers smartphone and electrical vehicles up to four times, but also creates a small, compact battery.

If you own a home computer you probably know that there are really only two flavors.

Mac and PC.

The PC has rules the roost for many years, with windows being the operating system we all know and …love?

If you work with computers in your office, chances are you have a PC. At least, that used to be the case.

These days things are changing and companies are letting Macs into their offices and are running them all with joy, at least in some cases.

Although what is also interesting is that Mac only really makes up a small percentage of the market, some say around 5%.

Let’s take a look at the main differences between the Mac and the PC.

Main Differences

Although the output of these computers are almost the same, how they work and look is a huge thing.


If you have seen the Mac around since it was first on the market in 1984, you will know that one of the main differences is how they look.

Some of the earlier macs had striking colors, and these days with the whole mac range, they have settled on a brushed Aluminium look that many of the phones also use.

If you are a fan of design, then the Mac certainly wins out here!


Macs have always been on the premium side, which kinda goes along with their sexy image.

The prices are often far more than a PC, with many claiming that a great device costs a lot of money.

Many would argue against this and say you only need to pay for what you need. In which case the PC often wins.

And now that PCs often come with Android installed or use a very simple setup, the are also very cheap.


Macs used to run on very different technology but a few years ago they teamed up with Intel and started using the same chips as in PCs.

So in this sense, although the Macs are very different, on the inside they are often very similar.

So when it comes to tech, the only major difference is that the macs have their own connector type which has very fast transfer speeds – the lightening connector.


Perhaps one of the reasons that Macs are so expensive is that they control everything.

From the manufacture of the computers to the integration of the software.

So although there is a lot more variation in PCs, the quality of the Macs can be higher because they are in complete control.

Operating Systems

It all falls back to the main difference between these two computers and that is the OS, or Operating System.

PCs are based on DOS which became Windows and has continued like this until today.

Mac OS is based on Linux, a server based system, that is very robust and easy to maintain.

They have built their own interface on top to make it super user friendly and reliable.


One of the downsides of the control imposed my Apple is that there is far less software choice when it comes to Macs.

Although there are always the fundamentals (photos, office tools etc) many of the more niche products and games only come out on PC. Or PC first.

So when you are considering a PC or Mac, you need to keep this in mind.


Of course this tight control also comes with a major plus and that is security.

PCs are attacked constantly and many people do not even know they have a virus or malware installed on their machines.

But with a Mac this is very uncommon and they have their own software already installed to protect you.


Choosing between a Mac and PC is not an easy choice with so many factors to consider.
